Accessibility

This site should be usable if you have low vision, do not use a mouse, or find movement on a screen difficult. Below is what has been done for that — and what is not yet in order.

This page is a translation of the Dutch text. If the two versions differ, the Dutch version prevails. Lees de Nederlandse versie.

Draft. This is not yet a formal accessibility statement. The text does describe exactly what the system does — the retention period, the access rules and the processors are set up that way in the database. What is missing is the legal review, and that must be in place before the site goes live.

What has been done

Contrast is measured, not estimated: Every colour combination in the design system is automatically tested for a ratio of at least 4.5 to 1. If a pair falls short, the build fails.
Colour never stands alone: A phase, a status or a state always carries a word or a shape as well. If you do not see colours, or see them differently, you miss no information.
Everything can be operated with the keyboard: Including the node on the home page: with the Tab key you step through the six phases, and the same explanation appears as when you point at them. Every element gets a visible focus outline.
A skip link at the top of every page: The first tab stop jumps to the content. That saves six tabs through the menu on every page.
Motion can be switched off: If “reduce motion” is switched on in your system, the grid on the home page stands still and the transitions disappear. No information is lost, because motion carries nothing here.
What is shown as an image is also there as text: The map of the labs has a description that names all of them, and the same labs are listed below it as clickable links.

What is not yet in order

This list is the most important part of the page. A statement that only says what goes well says nothing.

There is no automated accessibility test: The build checks contrast, but not whether headings follow a logical order, whether every form field has a label, or whether the tab order is right. That is manual work for now, and so it is not guaranteed.
It has not been tested with a screen reader: Not with NVDA, not with VoiceOver, not by someone who uses one every day. That last one is the only test that really counts, and it has not happened yet.
Two elements disappear on a narrow screen: The node wheel and the lab map drop out below 700 pixels, because they become unreadable there. The content remains reachable as a list, but it is a different experience.
Images do not yet have alternative text: The photos on the site are sample material and are set as decoration. As soon as real photos with cleared rights arrive, each photo should get a description.
The review tool is not fully keyboard-friendly: You place comments by clicking on the page. That does not work without a mouse. The tool is only for partners and not for visitors, but it should still be fixed.
No formal statement has been filed yet: Government websites have a fixed model with a compliance status. Whether BRIX falls under it depends on the legal form the consortium chooses. Once that is settled, the official statement belongs here, not this text.
